Privacy Policy

Puhekieli is a translation app. It is published by Native Tongue LLC, and in this policy "we" and "us" mean Native Tongue LLC. This policy explains, in plain language, what the app does with your text and what the optional "Make translations faster" setting shares when you choose to turn it on.

The short version

  • The app translates text between English (or another source language you pick) and Finnish.
  • By default, nothing you type is shared with us or with other users.
  • There are two optional settings, both off until you turn them on: "Make translations faster" (a shared library that never sends the text you typed), and "Send flagged translations for review" (when you thumbs-down a translation, it sends that phrase and its translation so a professional translator can fix it). Turning one of these on is the only thing that shares any data, and you can turn them off again at any time.
  • We do not track you. There are no advertising identifiers, no location, no contacts, and no account.

What the app stores on your device

To work well and to remember your translations, the app keeps data on your device only:

  • Your translation history and saved phrases.
  • A local translation memory (a cache of translations you have already made) so repeat translations are instant.
  • Your thumbs up / down ratings on translations.
  • Your settings and preferences.

This on-device data stays on your device. The optional iCloud sync and the managed-keys options are not enabled in this build and perform no network work.

The optional "Make translations faster" setting

This setting is off by default. The first time you turn it on, the app shows a short confirmation screen that links to this Privacy Policy and to the Terms. Turning it on means you agree to both.

When the setting is on:

  • After a translation, the app may contribute that translation to a shared library so the same phrase can be served instantly to other people who type it. Your contribution contains two things:
    1. The translated result (the target text), and
    2. A one-way hash of your normalized input. We never send or store the readable text you typed. The hash is a fixed-length code computed from your input; it cannot be turned back into your original text by us or anyone else, and it is the only representation of your input that leaves your device.
  • The app also downloads the shared library (a list of hashed inputs and their translations) to your device. This makes common translations faster and lets them work offline.

Retrieval is exact-match only. The app can only ever return a translation for a phrase you yourself typed, because the lookup is done by the hash of your own input. There is no way to browse, search, or list other people's phrases.

The random install identifier

When the setting is on, the app includes a random identifier with each contribution. This identifier:

  • Is generated by the app, at random, on your device.
  • Is used for one purpose only: so the server can count how many distinct installs have submitted the same phrase (see the threshold below).
  • Is not a device identifier. It is not your Apple ID, IDFA, IDFV, phone number, or any hardware identifier, and it is not used to track you.
  • Is resettable. The server stores only a salted, one-way hash of it, never the identifier itself.

You can reset it at any time by turning the setting off, which rotates it to a new random value.

How a phrase becomes part of the shared library

A phrase is added to the public, downloadable library only after at least three distinct installs have independently submitted the same phrase. A phrase submitted by only one or two installs never becomes public. This threshold means the shared library reflects common phrasing, not anything unique to one person.

Before any translation is accepted, it is filtered on your device and again on the server to remove text that looks like personal information (for example emails, phone numbers, and long number sequences) and to remove objectionable content.

The optional "Send flagged translations for review" setting

Separately from the shared library, you can rate any translation with a thumbs up or thumbs down. Your ratings are stored on your device. This is the one feature that, when you opt in, sends the readable text, because a human translator needs to read a phrase to fix it.

This setting is off by default. The first time you thumbs-down a translation, the app shows a short confirmation screen (which also links this Privacy Policy and the Terms) asking whether to send flagged translations for review. You can also turn it on or off any time in Settings.

When it is on, a thumbs-down sends the phrase you flagged (the readable source text) and its translation, the language pair and register, and the same random, resettable install identifier described above (stored by the server only as a salted, one-way hash). Thumbs-up ratings are kept on your device and are not sent.

We use the flagged translations only to review and improve translation quality: the most-flagged phrases are compiled, roughly every two weeks, into a private review list that a professional translator we work with can correct. This data is filtered for personal information (on your device and again on our server) before it is stored, is not linked to your identity, and is never sold or used for advertising or tracking.

Your choices and controls

  • Turn it off any time. Turning "Make translations faster" off stops all contribution, deletes the local copy of the shared library from your device, and rotates your random install identifier. Turning "Send flagged translations for review" off stops any further flagged translations from being sent.
  • Report a translation. Any result served from the shared library has a "Report translation" action. Reporting hides that entry on your device immediately and asks us to review and remove it.
  • Withdrawal limits. Once entries have been pooled and aggregated across at least three installs, they are de-identified and cannot be traced back to or individually withdrawn by any single contributor. You can always stop contributing and reset your identifier, and you can report any specific entry for removal.

Data retention and deletion

  • On-device data (your history, saved phrases, local translation memory, and settings) stays on your device. It is removed when you delete it in the app or when you remove the app.
  • When "Make translations faster" is on, a contribution that has not yet reached the three-install threshold is held only as pending data. If it does not reach the threshold within 90 days, it is deleted automatically.
  • Once a phrase has been pooled and aggregated across at least three installs it is de-identified, so it is retained as part of the shared library. As noted under "Your choices and controls", a de-identified entry cannot be traced back to or withdrawn by any single contributor.
  • You can stop contributing and rotate your identifier at any time by turning the setting off, you can report any shared entry for removal, and you can send any privacy, access, or deletion request to .

Data we do not collect

We do not collect your name, email, contacts, precise or coarse location, advertising identifiers, or device identifiers, and we do not use any data for tracking or advertising.

Children

Puhekieli is a general-audience translation tool and is not directed at children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top and post the new version at this address.
